When is a chimneysweep needed?
Chimneysweeps are needed at least once a year or, depending on what type of wood is burned in the firebox, every 75 to 85 fireplace uses. Summer cleanings are recommended to prepare for the upcoming burning season, unless excess burning makes it likely that in the warm summer months there will be an odor problem due to build up of chemicals in the chimney. Fireplaces that are serviced regularly are in better repair than those that are neglected for long periods of time.
Any number or problems ranging from creosote-a flammable chemical that is emitted from burning wood and sticks to the interior of the chimney- build up to animals living in the chimney can result from lack of maintenance. Chimneysweeps will maintain the chimney and suggest maintenance tips for the homeowner on how to best care for the fireplace, and ultimately, the home, as faulty fireplaces can be responsible for house fires.
